The Great Food Collection is an annual campaign carried out, together, by the 56 Food Banks of Spain. The campaign starts this coming December 1 and will last all day on Friday and Saturday. At Alimmenta we recently wondered if there will be people who doubt what food to donate. Beyond a packet of pasta or rice -food, on the other hand, not inconsiderable- there are other practical and nutritionally interesting options. For this reason, we contacted the Spanish Federation of Food Banks to find out what their priorities are. Taking into account the usual recommendations of the Federation, the dietician-nutritionist Jessica Hierro stood in front of the Alimmenta camera to report “What can we donate?” in this Great Food Drive 2017.
In general, the Spanish Federation of Food Banks recommends donating non-perishable food packaged in containers that are NOT glass, something that will facilitate its transport. You can collaborate with basic products such as cereals, legumes, milk or oil, and also with products such as sauces, juices or nuts. It is also interesting to provide precooked foods, preserves and baby foods, such as powdered milk or baby food. Jessica Hierro expands the information in this video that we invite you to share on the networks.
And remember, this weekend, December 1 and 2, food chains, transport and logistics companies, as well as the media, foundations and also many volunteers, will be working hard to try to exceed last year’s figure: 22 million kilos of food, the figure higher than the Federation of Food Banks had collected to date. Last year some 129,000 volunteers participated in the day, collecting an average of 170.5 kilos each. The Spanish Federation of Food Banks “is counting on you.”
